In order to determine the position of the target ,the signal processing cct of the ground equipment derive a mean position of the target as it is illuminated by successive strikes from the interrogator.
Unfortunately for a no of reasons the strength of the return from succeeding interrogation is not necessarily const.,with the result that the indication may not corresponds with the actual target position.
When this occurs on successive aerials rotations the track of the target a/c may well be indicated as an irregular zig-zag, even though the aircraft is steering a const course.This effect is known as Track wander.
Track wander is eliminated by mono pulse technique. In this it measures the bearing for each individual returned pulses as compared with the basic SSR system which determines bearing from the mean of a no of strikes.
