We all know that almost every electrical circuit uses these devices. These all are electro mechanical devices & these devices either interrupt or complete a circuit when activated from a remote source. But there are differences between them by their uses & constrcution. Many students are still confused regarding this.So lets discuss about these devices.......
Relay: It consists of a coil, moving contact(armature) & external connections. When the coil has current flowing through it the electromagnetic effect pulls in the contact armature .The armature is pivoted and is held in position by the spring force; with no current flowing the armature returns to its original position by the spring force.
Contactors: It also operate in the same way as relay but its physical construction and application is different.Relay is normally used for Low current but contactor are used for switching higher current.(e.g.-for connecting battery to starter). It also consists of coil, armature and external connection just like relay but in contactor the moving element is coil not the armature(as in relay) ,and contact(armature) is stationary which is a advantage over relay because contact should be stationary to avoid sparks.
Solenoid: It is also an electro mechanical device ,It is a type of transducer that converts electrical energy into linear displacement .It normally uses for the actuation of pneumatic or hydraulic valves. It consists of an inductive coil wound around a steel or iron armature. The coil is formed such that the armature can be moved in and out of the solenoid's body(Unlike relay & contactor). The armature is used to provide the mechanical force required to the item being moved.

sir i have one doubt. as you said in contactor that armature will not move and coil will move to avoid spark. but sir what will benifit of it because spark will also occur in this setuation also because it is tendency to spark when two surface comes near no matter which surface comes near.
ReplyDeleteThe relay is more for control of power where so the solenoid is for control are hydraulics pneumatics and liquid
Deletei also stick wit same doubt!!!!!!!!!!!
