There are so many factors which can reduce the life of a battery. But here i am discussing about most common & overlooked cause.
It is important that battery should be fully charged before taking in to use.But due to this requirement many of us have forgotten that battery should not be overcharged. Some times in hurry we just use the battery which is undercharged. There is danger from both overcharging & undercharging.
Correct charging is very important and will affect the overall life of the battery. The charging process is not 100% efficient due to losses resulting from internal resistance and will typically be 10% to 20% higher than the amount of capacity removed during discharge.
Problems due to overcharged.
Overcharging generally occurs when constant current charging is used without adequate control. So we prefer constant voltage over constant current.
1. High internal heat is created ,which can damage the battery ,& which accelerates the deteriorating chemical reactions that take place in the battery.
2.The acid which is very corrosive ,can be forced out of the battery and damage surrounding areas.
3.Decomposes the water, due to which concentration of acid increases, which can damage the battery.
4.It will corrode the positive grids
Problems due to undercharged
Undercharging a battery occurs when the required 105% to 115 % of the removed capacity is not returned during recharge.
1.It can results in reduced capacity of the battery .
2.A battery operated in an undercharged condition for a long period can develop a sulfate on its plates that cannot be reconverted during charge. This is usually referred to as sulfation. This material can set up mechanical strain inside the battery and cause damage.
3 .An undercharged battery may freeze.
For knowing that your battery is getting proper charged or not,you should measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte because ammeter and voltmeter indication are not sufficient.
Overcharging is indicated by a large use of water. If your battery needs water often ,it may be overcharged.
Now, this one is just for a knowledge......... Many of you have noticed while trying to start an aircraft or a car with a weak battery , you might get a few extra cranks by waiting a few minutes after a unsuccessful try before trying again. This gives the chemicals time to seep into the plates of the battery and replace the chemical used up in the previous attempt at starting. This will not rejuvenate a battery but it may give a few extra tries in marginal circumstances.
