With a co located station ,the DME identification,which occurs twice a minute in code,is timed to fall in sequence with the identification from the VOR station.
If both audio outputs are listened to simultaneously ,then the code identification will fall in sequence.If the DME is a non co located station the identification will not be synchronous with the VOR code identification & will interfere with the VOR identification ,if both are listened to at the same time.
